Map: MD Judicial Appellate Districts http://lwvmd.org/n/sites/default/files/images/map.judge_.appellate.gif Maryland has seven Appellate Court Districts, based on county lines. Citizens vote to confirm appellate judges from their districts and any at-large judges.
Each of the seven districts sends one judge to be on the Court of Appeals, which is the highest court in the State (commonly called the Supreme Court in other states and at the federal level), and one judge to be on the Court of Special Appeals. There are also six judges elected at-large to the Court of Special Appeals. The appellate courts review a trial court’s (District or Circuit Court) actions and decisions in given cases and decide whether the trial judge properly followed the law and legal precedent. |
